READING GENESIS, by Marilynne RobinsonMarilynne Robinson’s “Reading Genesis” is a writer’s book, not a scholar’s; it has no footnotes. Its power lies in the particular reading it gives us of one of the world’s foundational texts, which is also one of the foundations of the Pulitzer Prize-winning author’s mind and faith. We want to know what Robinson thinks of Genesis for the same reason we’d want to know what Tolstoy thought of it. The spirit of God moves on the face of the waters, and eventually, far off in Idaho, the novelist’s bedsheets stir. But the surprising thing about “Reading Genesis,” given that it’s by a writer who can make even nonbelievers feel the presence of the thing they disbelieve, is that it is hardly interested in the numinous.

Marilynne Robinson is one of the great living novelists. She has won a Pulitzer Prize and a National Humanities Medal, and Barack Obama took time out of his presidency to interview her at length. In recent years, Robinson has tightened the links between her literary pursuits and her Christianity, writing essays about Calvinism and other theological traditions. I don’t have a proper night stand and I don’t usually read before bedtime. However, my metaphorical night stand includes “Moby-Dick,” “Don Quixote,” three of Virginia Woolf’s lesser-known novels (“The Voyage Out,” “Night and Day” and “The Years”) and the complete work of Beatrix Potter. (Books written to be consumed at one sitting or in a day don’t interest me.) Rather, they read word by word, sentence by sentence, and they ponder over an unfamiliar word choice, a fleeting gesture, the shadow of an image, and the ripple of a sentence seen in the following sentence. It’s a testament to the art of reading with not only five senses but also with memory and imagination.

I first got a job doing tours at the Witch House, which is the only remaining structure you can visit in Salem with any ties to the Salem witch trials. I've been studying the Salem witch trials on my own since I was 15, and I came to Salem for the first time at that age. I picked up a book by Marilynne K. Roach, which is like the definitive book on the Salem witch trials, and I got into learning about it from there. I have 12 stops on my tour, including the Salem Witch Trial Memorial, which is where we end our tours.
